Hear Halsey’s new Kate Bush-inspired single, I Never Loved You
With two weeks to go until The Great Impersonator, Halsey has unveiled another major inspiration for the decades-spanning concept record: Kate Bush.
After working with Nine Inch Nails on last year’s incredible If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power, it looks as though Halsey is heading back to pop for the album’s follow-up.
Less than a year since the release of last year's incredible I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power album, Halsey has shared that more new music is already in the works.
And while Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross brought their production chops to the genre-bending fourth LP to amazing effect, it sounds as though for album number five the New Jersey star will be heading back to poppier terrains.
Taking to Instagram over the weekend, Halsey posted that, “Due to personal reasons I will be making a pop album.” The musician added: “I have an incredible song that I could put out as a single for radio next but I feel like that’s insane to do bc I haven’t even toured [If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power] yet idk,” and, “I actually have like a few. Idk what to dooooo.”
Around the time of If I Can't Have Love…, Halsey shared of Nine Inch Nails' approach to production: "Trent said something to me that I’ll never forget for the rest of my life, where he was like, 'Hey, the record is great how it is.' He was like, ‘So you could not do this with us and put it out.' He’s like, 'Or, the way a lot of modern music is right now is it informs the listener not to pay attention. It says, this song is safe. You can put it on a playlist. You can listen to it in a car. You can play it on a party, and it’s not going to fuck up the vibe. It blends in with everything else. It’s a mood. It’s chill. But it informs you not to pay attention.'
"He was like, 'Your songs, I think, deserve better than that, and I think that they should make people pay attention to what you’re saying.’ He said, 'So I’m going to make some really weird choices.’ And I was like, 'Please make weird choices. Make the weirdest choices!’”
