Nottingham black metallers Underdark have shared a crushing cover of Massive Attack’s 1991 classic single Unfinished Sympathy.

This reworked rendition arrives along with the news that the band have signed to Church Road Records for their next album – the follow-up to 2021’s 4/5-rated debut Our Bodies Burned Bright On Re-Entry.

“We are beyond excited to announce that our second album Managed Decline is coming out on Church Road Records,” say Underdark. “Church Road is a label we’ve long admired and to be able to release our second album through them is truly an honour. We believe this album represents a big leap forward for us as artists and we’re very grateful to be able to share it with you all.

“In the meantime, enjoy this cover of Massive Attack’s Unfinished Sympathy we crafted in-between work on the new album. You can learn a lot from playing someone else’s music, so when we decided to cover a song during the recording process of the second album, it needed to be something challenging and totally different from what we’d usually do.

“Unfinished Sympathy seemed like a great choice as the song builds around a central theme and the arrangement is more linear than the music we’re used to playing. It’s also a song you probably wouldn’t expect a metal band to cover and we were keen to interpret it in our own style. Not to mention one of our all-time favourite songs.”
