Smashing Pumpkins have announced a tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of their landmark album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.

The band announced the show in dramatic style at an intimate “requiem” for the character of Zero, the persona vocalist Billy Corgan adopted on stage during the Mellon Collie era.

Taking place in Hollywood last night (May 17), the funeral-themed show - which was also livestreamed - featured a black-and-white photo of Corgan from that era in a silver frame and a coffin in the middle of the venue guarded by men wearing Zero shirts. There was even a eulogy for him given by Billy’s wife Chloe Mendel.

“Zero is dead. In the brisk and heady autumn of 1995, Zero appeared without warning: As mirror, wound, joke, threat, prayer and then, a reflection in glass,” Smashing Pumpkins said on their social media.

“Countless souls understood, countless others did not, and yet, the lonely kept him alive far longer and into some greater influence than anyone might have intended. For that, we know Zero and those who loved him are grateful.”

Billy then performed a series of Mellon Collie’s most notable cuts, including 1979, Bullet With Butterfly Wings, Jellybelly, Tonight, Tonight, Porcelina of the Vast Oceans and Zero, as well as the first live airing of Here Is No Why since 1997.

The tour, titled The Rats In A Cage Tour, will see the Pumpkins play “two distinct sets” that each celebrate “the 30th anniversary of Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness plus nearly four decades of hits and dark treasures.”

Smashing Pumpkins will hit the road at the end of September - right after taking their orchestral and operatic re-imagining of Mellon Collie across the UK and Europe - beginning in Columbus, Ohio. The tour will then continue across North America throughout October and November.
