Green Day Called Out Donald Trump While Performing American Idiot Live This Weekend

While Green Day won't necessarily be taking aim at Donald Trump in their forthcoming Father Of All… album, it seemingly won't be stopping frontman Billie Joe Armstrong from making a political statement live regarding their current president. Case in point: this weekend's performance at the iHeartRadio Festival.

The punk rock titans hit the Las Vegas event over the weekend for an ace six-song performance, with Billie Joe switching up the lyrics to the band's legendary 2004 hit single American Idiot in the set's opening; instead of singing, 'I'm not a part of the redneck agenda,' the vocalist changed the words to, 'I'm not a part of the MAGA agenda,' of course referring to Trump's infamous Make America Great Again slogan.

Speaking to Kerrang! recently, Billie Joe revealed that there would be some political nods in his lyrics for Green Day's new music – but nothing explicitly about Trump.

“It’s coming from a place of feeling like you’re out of control, and you’re not in charge of your own body anymore," he said. “It paints pictures or vignettes of what life is like for me and for other people that, I feel like, are desperate. And I mean that in an empathetic way, where people in America have become very desperate with their situations. There’s factories being shut down, gentrification…”

And while 2016's brilliant Revolution Radio (several songs of which reflected the political situation at the time) was released just a month before the presidential election on November 8, the songwriter didn't use Trump whatsoever as an influence on album number 13.

“I mean, I draw no inspiration from the President of the United States, because he’s just… there’s nothing," continued Billie Joe. "Trump gives me diarrhoea (laughs), you know? I don’t want to write a song about it!
