Following Lux Æterna, Screaming Suicide and If Darkness Had A Son, Metallica have just unveiled the fourth new song from their upcoming album 72 Seasons.

The thrashy new title-track of course encapsulates everything that the metal legends have spoken about in regards to the meaning of the record (‘Wrath of man / Thrive upon / Feeding on / 72 seasons gone’), with frontman James Hetfield previously explaining: “The first 18 years of our lives that form our true or false selves. The concept that we were told ‘who we are’ by our parents. A possible pigeonholing around what kind of personality we are.

“I think the most interesting part of this is the continued study of those core beliefs and how it affects our perception of the world today. Much of our adult experience is re-enactment or reaction to these childhood experiences. Prisoners of childhood or breaking free of those bondages we carry.”

Earlier this week, bassist Rob Trujillo reflected on these themes, and how what James has been through in recent years has made 72 Seasons more “powerful”.

“I think we all had a pretty good idea that he would be sharing a story, an energy,” Rob said. “With all of the impactful thoughts and what was going on in his world, it would almost be impossible for that not to happen. That’s also what makes this album great – what he’s gone through and how he’s had to grow. It’s almost like a rebirth in a lot of ways, because you’ve got to reconnect with your inner spirit, who you are, and what you’re about. And now you’re sending it, you’re bringing it, and you’re presenting it to us and eventually to the world, so it’s a very heavy thing for him. So at that point, I know it’s going to be a powerful record. This is going to be one of the more important records, I think, that Metallica’s ever made.”
