While we won’t know until February who’ll picking up the trophies at the 2023 GRAMMYs (IDLES or Turnstile? Ghost or Ozzy?), one thing is for certain: Nirvana will be honoured with a merit award.

The Recording Academy have announced a host of Special Merit Awards honorees, with the grunge legends picking up a Lifetime Achievement Award alongside Bobby McFerrin, Ma Rainey, Nile Rodgers, Slick Rick ‘The Ruler’, The Supremes, and Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson of Heart.

The Special Merit Awards Ceremony – which celebrates those who ‘have made creative contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording’ – will take place as an in-person event next month, during the week of the GRAMMYs in Los Angeles.

“The Academy is proud to celebrate this diverse slate of influential music people spanning numerous genres and crafts as our 2023 Special Merit Awards honorees,” says Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. “Each creator on this list has made an impact on our industry – from technical to creative achievements – representing the breadth of music’s diverse community. We’re excited to celebrate this group of legends next month that continues to inspire and shape the music world.”

As for the 65th Annual GRAMMY Awards themselves, Måneskin are up for Best New Artist, while IDLES, Ozzy and Turnstile are nominated for Best Rock Performance. In the Best Metal Performance category we’ve got Ghost, Megadeth, Muse, Ozzy and Turnstile; in Best Rock Song there’s Ozzy, Turnstile and the Red Hot Chili Peppers; and in Best Rock Album the nominees include IDLES and Ozzy again, plus Machine Gun Kelly.
