Petrol Girls have released a stirring new single and video, Survivor.
"This song has been massively inspired by the growing movement against sexual violence," explains singer Ren Aldridge. "The people who've spoken up so courageously about their experiences have broken the silence that has protected abusers in the past, often at massive risk to their own safety and well-being. I hope that their bravery inspires the cultural shift in attitudes that is so desperately needed. We need a society-wide change in our attitudes towards sex and a basic understanding no one is entitled to another person’s body and that each individual has rights over their own body.
"I have also been shocked and frustrated by the ways that I have witnessed the anger of survivors being denied. There isn’t a “right way” to respond. It is fucking fine to be livid about what has happened to you. And this ties in something I’ve been thinking about that extends beyond the issue of sexual violence, where people who’ve been through something traumatic, are sometimes disempowered further, because people treat them like they’re totally helpless when they’re actually an incredibly strong and capable person.
"And I'm not gunna lie, it is also totally influenced by the Destiny’s Child song."
